Checking a D-Link router for a VPN client

Whether a D-Link can connect to Bebra depends on what your DIR’s menu offers, so start at 192.168.0.1. We found no client in the DIR-842 and DIR-825 documentation that could connect the router to Bebra. You can also install Bebra on this device right away.

Updated

What you find at 192.168.0.1

  1. An OpenVPN or PPTP client. Connect it with a login from your dashboard, as the router overview explains.
  2. Only “PPTP + Dynamic IP” among the WAN types. Not a regular client. See below.
  3. Neither, or only an IPsec section. This router can’t connect to Bebra. See the alternatives.

The “PPTP + Dynamic IP” WAN type

It sits under Net → WAN → Add, among the ways to reach your provider, and it takes the place of the one you use now. Your provider decides whether it can work.

Your provider assigns your address automatically, with no login (Dynamic IP, DHCP)

Worth a try. Write down your current WAN settings first so you can put them back.

Your provider gave you a username and password (PPPoE, L2TP or PPTP)

It won’t work. The new type would replace the connection that logs you in.

No client in the menu

Put Bebra on the devices instead. Computers and phones get the app for their system. For the TV there’s an app for Android TV, installed from an APK file, and one for Apple TV in the App Store.

The other route is a router that runs the Bebra app. Its WAN port goes to any LAN port on the D-Link, and your devices move to its Wi-Fi.

D-Link questions

Which second router should I get?

The easiest choice is the one we tested the Bebra app on, the Keenetic Hopper KN-3811. Other Keenetic and Netcraze models, OpenWrt routers and MikroTiks can run it too if they meet their brand’s model, firmware and memory requirements, listed on the router overview.

I found a client, but my dashboard shows no router settings

They appear once you click Get router settings under Router → Other routers. You need an active subscription, and the trial counts.
