Setting up a VPN on a TP‑Link Archer

Some TP-Link Archer routers have a client in the firmware that can connect out over OpenVPN or PPTP. On those models you can add Bebra from the router’s own menu and pick exactly which devices use it.

Adding Bebra to an Archer

You’ll need a computer or phone on this router’s Wi-Fi and the router’s admin password.

  1. Get the login and the file

Sign in to your Bebra dashboard and go to the Other routers tab under Router. Click Get router settings, then Download .OVPN beside the country you want. Allow about two minutes before the login works.

  2. Open VPN Client

Go to tplinkwifi.net (tplinkmodem.net on Archer MR and TL-MR models) and sign in to the router. Under Advanced, choose VPN Client, turn it on with the toggle and click Save.

  3. Create and enable a profile

In Server List, click Add, type any description and set VPN Type to OpenVPN. Use Browse to upload the file you downloaded, enter the login and password from your dashboard, and save. Then switch the profile on in its Server List row.

  4. Add devices to the list

In Device List, click Add, tick the TV, laptop or console that should use Bebra, and confirm. Finish with Save.

Only listed devices use the VPN

TP-Link’s client only serves what’s in Device List, and the rest of the network bypasses Bebra. That’s handy when the TV needs Bebra and a work laptop doesn’t.

A device you add to the network later stays outside until you put it on the list. If a new streaming stick or a visitor’s tablet should go through Bebra, add it the way you did in the last step.

Using PPTP instead. VPN Type also offers PPTP, and that one works without a file. Type the server’s IP from your dashboard into the server field, add the login and password, and choose MPPE for encryption. It’s simpler, but much weaker: the way PPTP checks passwords was broken back in 2012. Only fall back to it if OpenVPN won’t connect on your router.

When the Archer misbehaves

Will an Archer C80 work?

TP-Link doesn’t list the C80 among its models with VPN Client, so plan on a second router running our app behind the TP-Link, or install Bebra on the devices themselves.

I changed the password in my dashboard and the router lost its connection

The old password stops working about two minutes after you issue a new one. Open the profile in Server List and type the new password in. You don’t need a fresh .ovpn file, since the file holds no login or password.

Can I keep profiles for several countries?

Yes. Server List has room for six profiles, and only one of them can be active. Set up a profile per country, each with its own .ovpn file, and switch between them in the list.
